Best Porchetta in Rome

What is Porchetta?

Porchetta is a specially made pork roast. The meat is specially prepared and seasoned and then wrapped back up with the meat still in its skin and then slowly cooked for several hours.

Where did Porchetta Originate?

Porchetta originated in the Italy providence if Lazio, in a small town located just outside of Rome called Ariccia in the Castelli Romani region. They claim to be the birth place of Porchetta because for 3000 years the Prisci Latinn Priests have prepaired porchetta once a year to celibate the birth of the Latin League. Only Porchetta produced in Ariccia gets the Italian DOP certification. DOP is an acronym for Denominazione di Origine Protetta (“Protected Destination of Origin”) This government certification ensures products are locally grown and packaged.

Where to Buy Prochetta?

Porchetta can be found all over Italy and even throughout the world but it is especially popular throughout the Rome area and especially the Castelli Romani Region, being the birth place of Porchetta.

In Search of the Best Prorchetta.

We are currently preparing a Youtube video where we will be traveling to several prok shops where we will search for the best Porchetta. We will fisrt travel to the Roman countryside in search of the best porchetta. Seeing the Ariccia is the birth place of Porchetta we thought it would only be right to stop there first. Just because they were the first does not mean they are the best but it feels like the logical place to start our search. We are excited to taste the porchetta from its birth place and all the porchetta that we can sink out teeth into. Be sure to follow us on our YouTube channel if you would like to see the video when it is ready for release. Our channel is about all things Rome.

La Norcineria di lacozzilli is located in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood, just west of the Tiber River. Trastevere has long been know for some of the best dining options in Rome. A stop to this Norcineria is included on many food tours. Will the here porchetta live up to its reputation?

4. Fouth Stop - Panificio Bonci in Rome

Address: Via Trionfale, 36, Rome

Located out near The Vatican, this bread shop is known for some of the best bread in Rome and paired with the porchetta should make for a great sandwich. Having great bread is certainly a big part in making a great sandwich. Panificio Bonci sources its Porchetta from the small town Morino located just outside of Rome from Norcino Bernabei. Norcino Barnabei uses it’s own process that includes steam and convection oven as well as smaller animals to produce what they claim to be a more moist and flavorful porchetta. For most tourists it can be a bit difficult to get out to Marino so having the porchetta available at Panificio Bonci makes it very convenient.

If by chance you have the time and want to take a train to visit the legendary pork shop yourself, It is very easy. Hop on a train from Termini and head to Morino. The train ride is about 35 minutes and costs under 5 euro round trip. One ther head up the steep stairs to the city center. From there it is about a 5 minute walk to Norcino Barnabei. There are trains about every hour from Termini but check Trenitalia website for more infomation.
