Simple tip to help you use the Rome metro and get where you want so go.

Using the metro if the fastest way to travel to most locations in Rome. The metro is fast and reliable with train cars arriving several times per hour. The metro connects several of Rome’s sites as well as dozens of neighborhoods throughout Rome. Taking a few minutes learning how to use the metro can help make your visit to Rome more enjoyable.

Is The Metro Safe?

The answer is a little tricky as it is both very safe and unsafe. Chances of being involved or seeing any violent crime on the metro is very, very low. It is much safer them most underground rails in the states and most other countries. However pickpockets is a problem and the metro is unfortunately is where many pickpockets happen. There are some simple things you can do to limit your exposure to pickpockets but chances are you will not have a problem. To learn more watch this video on how to outsmart pickpockets.

Metro tickets

Currently the cost of the Metro is 1.5 euros. Tickets are the same is a bus ticket and are good for 1 ride including transfers. If you use the ticket for the bus it is good for 100 minutes from validation. Tickets can be purchased in the metro and vending machines and some stations have tellers. Tickets can also be purchased at many bars and tobacco shops. When you find a verndor it is wise to buy several for your stay so you sill not have to purchase every time. Single tickets are usually a better value than day or multi day passes as I rarely need to take more than 4 bus or metro rides in 1 day, but convenience of a day pass for 7 euro or a 2 day pass for 12 euro is good option.

Rome Metro Lines

There are currently 2 metro lines (3rd currently under construction) in Rome that intersect at the Termini train station so if you need to switch lines that is were you will do it. Line A runs from Battistini to Anagnina. The B line runs from Laurentina to Jonio & Rebibbia splitting at Bolgnia. If you need to make a stop after Bolognia just fiind the train you need heading to either Jonio or Rebibbia on the B line. Most tourisit do not venture out that far so for most people you will not neeed to wory about the split. These are the stations would will need to be familiar with as you ride to metro. The metro coming through the station will always indicates on the front car the final station it is heading to. If there is a stop along the way that you want to go just find the signs to the tracks that lead to the final destination.

If you by chance get on a tram heading the wrong direction just get off at the next station and go to the track heading the other direction. If you are on line A and want to go to a stop on line B just to to the Termini station and just switch lines there heading in the direction you need. Super easy!

JUST FYI

Every station and every tram car has a map to all of the stops & all the stations as you arrrive are clearly marked helping you easily navigate the metro & correct course if needed.
